The UK/Kenya Season 2025 is here!

The British Council is collaborating with The Africa Centre and partners in the UK and Kenya to present a landmark cultural programme of activities in 2025 that celebrate creativity and innovation through the arts, culture, and education. Activities will take place in both countries between May and November 2025, with public events showcasing work ranging from architecture, design, and fashion to literature, music, visual arts, performing arts, and film. The programme and related activities aim to foster deeper understanding and stronger connections between the UK and Kenya.

The Season launches on Wednesday with the exhibition In Transit under another sky. Curated by Rosie Olang’ and Mirembe, the exhibition explores the idea of the house and home as poetic, psychological, and political spaces: featuring work by Larry Achiampong, Mohamed Almusibli, Kabi Kimari, Mogoi, Neema Ngelime, SCARLETMOTIFF and Emma Wolukau-Wanambwa.

Throughout the UK the Season’s activities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will ensure broad engagement with diverse communities and audiences. This includes literary and cinematic highlights in Wales, where the Hay Festival and Watch Africa Cymru will spotlight Kenyan voices and films. Bradford, the UK City of Culture 2025, will host live performances of contemporary Kenyan music, while Norwich will celebrate Afrocentric culture through Afri-Fest East, a major summer event. One highlight activity that will travel across the UK is the short film programme Manyatta Mengi Mashariki, which will be presented in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland from September.

Thematic diversity is a hallmark of the programme. Audiences can experience the powerful visual storytelling of In Transit Under Another Sky, meet celebrated writers at the Hay Festival; move to the rhythms Kenyan singer Chimano’s Heavy is the Crown live show; take part in participatory Odi Dance and East African Rumba workshops; experience Kenyan fashion on the catwalk at Africa Fashion Week London; or learn new perspectives on architecture and the built environment at forums such as Afropolitan Ecologies and Architecture as an Earth Practice. Tying the Season together, the UK activities will close with the Creative Industries Symposium at Somerset House, which will explore the future of cultural economies – examining visual arts, film, music and investment in the creative industries — offering a programme that is as intellectually engaging as it is artistically inspiring.
