Events Decolonising the Archive (DTA) Presents Museum Restitution Course Community Consultation with Special Guest Professor Kyle Mays (California UCLA) Decolonising the Archive (DTA): Museum Restitution Course Launch Event Addressing the Harmful Legacy of Exhibiting Human Remains in Museums Join Decolonising the Archive (DTA) as we unveil our Museum Restitution Course, inspired by the success of our acclaimed Correcting Our Collecting Course. This initiative directly challenges the unethical practice of exhibiting or mislabeling ancestral remains, often catalogued dismissively as 'mummies,' within museum and heritage spaces. This event will bring together museum practitioners, students, humanitarians, and the wider community to explore the cultural and sociological damage caused by these practices, especially to African heritage communities whose ancestors have been displaced and displayed. Special Guest Lecture: Professor Kyle Mays (California) Professor Kyle Mays, an Afro-Indigenous (Saginaw Chippewa Native American) writer and scholar, will deliver a compelling lecture titled: “Black Reparations & Tribal Sovereignty: A Decolonial Critique” Professor Mays is the acclaimed author of An Afro-Indigenous History of the United States, City of Dispossession, and a contributor to Four Hundred Souls. His insights will shed light on Native American experiences with restitution and reparations, offering a critical lens for global decolonial efforts.
