Hosted by The London Archives in Clerkenwell, this relaxed, drop-in event on Friday 12 June lets you handle original documents at your own pace. Book a one-hour session at 1 pm or 2 pm. The Steve Rhodes Centenary Celebration

The Iba Ajie & Africa Centre celebrate Steve Rhodes (1926–2008), Oxford graduate, Highlife pioneer, first African TV producer at WNTV Ibadan, founder of The Steve Rhodes Voices, and Fela Kuti's first manager. The event features a photo exhibition, bio-documentaries, a panel discussion, and a concert by boundary-pushing Afrobeat artist Cef Ashanta, whose music blends African roots with global soul.

Whot About It? is a community games night centred on connection over competition. Open to beginners and seasoned players, the evening features icebreakers, free play, and real conversation in a chill, inclusive atmosphere. Escaping Babylon: An Intimate History of Black British Music

The Africa Centre hosts the launch of Escaping Babylon by Jesse Bernard, exploring 30 years of Black British music and its cultural impact. In conversation with Zakia Sewell, the event reflects on identity, creativity and legacy, with a DJ set by Jamie Joy celebrating the sounds that have shaped generations.

The Africa Centre is a home from home and offers welcoming and exciting spaces from our restaurant and bar to event spaces featuring live music , exhibitions and Africa Centre programme. You can also hire our spaces for your own event, be it a social occasion, team away day or community event.

The Africa Centre is a ‘home away from home’ for Africans in the UK and a warm and welcoming space offering authentic African heritage and cultural experiences to anyone with an interest in Africa. Our mission rests on Five Pillars of activity: Culture, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Community, and Intellectual Leadership.

Our Story

Originally conceived to foster non-governmental relations between newly independent Africa and Britain, The Africa Centre's mission is to educate, connect, and advocate for Africa and its diaspora. Previously located in Covent Garden, London for over five decades, we launched our new HQ in Southwark in June 2022.

Curated by Vee Belinga, the series explores intersectional experiences across London, Africa, and the diaspora. Chakula fosters joy, healing, and community. It is funded by Propel. Read more
