As 2024 came to a close and 2025 began, I found myself, like many of us, reflecting on the past year and setting intentions for the new one. One area I recognized as needing improvement was my tendency to get lost in the busy-ness of life, leaving little room for reflection or self-care—whether physical, emotional, or professional. This year, I’m making a conscious effort to prioritize these areas.

While some may raise an eyebrow at what might seem like a personal focus in an official blog, it is an important reminder that leaders are human, too. Reflective leaders who invest in their growth and well-being are better equipped to inspire others and foster progress within their organizations. I hope 2025 brings you opportunities for reflective growth as well.

Lately, I have been contemplating the qualities that define great leadership. Several individuals have particularly inspired me with their unique approaches:

  • Captain Ibrahim Traoré, leader of Burkina Faso, exemplifies courage, charisma, and intellectual brilliance, captivating many with his vision.
  • Moky Makura, CEO of Africa No Filter, recently used her platform to challenge outdated and condescending narratives about Africa with a powerful satirical response to an international publication.
  • Tony Warner, Founder of Black History Walks and co-founder of the Black Odysseys film programme, has mobilized over 15,000 signatories to protest the cancellation of a cherished cultural initiative, calling for accountability and justice. (Please support here)
  • At a recent University of Westminster event, Bolanle Austen-Peters, the celebrated film and theatre impresario, shared how a clear vision and an unwavering commitment to self-improvement have allowed her to inspire excellence and empower others.

What unites these leaders is their conviction—a steadfast commitment to their principles and the courage to manifest them in their spheres of influence. They remind me that while conviction does not shield us from challenges, it provides clarity, purpose, and direction. Moreover, who knows? Someone watching from afar may be drawing inspiration from your journey.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Despite moments of uncertainty in 2024 that tested us as an organization, we are immensely grateful for the unwavering support of our community. Our fundraising campaign remains a priority, and we humbly ask for your continued support and amplification of our efforts. Many cultural organizations have faced difficult decisions in recent months, from downsizing to closure. At The Africa Centre, we are determined to thrive for another 60 years—and with your help, we will.

We are thrilled about what’s in store for 2025. While we will share full details in our upcoming newsletter, here are some highlights:

  • The launch of the UK-Kenya 2025 Season in collaboration with the British Council.
  • Exciting new partnerships in the UK and across the continent.
  • A vibrant programme marking the 140th anniversary of the Berlin Conference’s conclusion, and reimagining Africa “Beyond Berlin.”

Stay tuned—there is much more to come!

A big welcome to our recently-appointed Director of Programmes, Fadil Elobeid. Fadil joins us from London School of Economics, where he was Africa Engagement Programme Manager at LSE’s Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa. Welcome to The Africa Centre, Fadil!
Finally, a special shout-out to Estelle Uba, a member of our Young Africa Centre, who has been recognized as one of the 100 Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) aged 18–25 for 2024. Congratulations, Estelle—we are so proud of you!

Wishing you all a fantastic month and an inspiring year ahead!
